- Art Alliance Austin Competition Board

The Austin Art Alliance solicited ideas for the Temporary Outdoor Gallery Space 2 (TOGS 2) competition in 2009. StudiOrganic responded to the solicitation. We designed what we felt answered the requirements of the temporary space. The strength of the Treaty Oak in Austin was the core of the design. The idea of a space being lit by natural light and/or under solar power was a must. The clear floor idea is to connect the viewer to the Earth. The pieces of art could also be inserted into the floor. This would push the artist to create art for this type of viewing angle. The Core-Tin steel wrap was inspired, again by the Treaty Oak. The roots of the tree extending down to the ground showing stability and connection to the ground. Core-Tin steel “roots” would be removable as well as movable to accommodate different locations around Austin.

The sound of flowing water brings tranquility to any home or office. This calming effect not only helps to increase productivity and creativity, it also reduces stress levels and leaves the inhabitants feeling more energized.
The Romans used elaborate fountains to attract people to a place for beauty and relaxation. Water is one of the most precious resources on the Earth, not to mention we humans are made mostly of water. The effects of a one of a kind design that we provide will certainly help home or business owners create an environment that will provide serenity.
My newest water feature design that is underway will include copper tubes, and and glass spheres. The inspiration comes from nature. The idea of having these copper tubes set at various angles in a vertical position reminds me of cut flowers in a vase. Copper is easy to manipulate into free forms. Glass spheres will be used as if they are a seed pod of sorts..
I love working with forms from nature! There is an organized process to nature. Frank Lloyd Wright taught that all we needed to learn was in Nature. So a new water feature will be brought to life soon.

From an early age I was inspired by my grandfather who was a master carpenter in East Texas. Growing up, I watched and learned a farm life, a wood working life. My first touch of Frank Lloyd Wright came to me in the form of Mrs. Wright’s book, The Struggle Within. I liked the idea of “learning by doing” concept that Mr. and Mrs. Wright started with the Taliesin Fellowship. This Utopian idea still lives to this day at both Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin and Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona.
I remember to this day the first time I set eyes on Taliesin West. It was a vacation many years later. Driving a rental car up the hill and around the curves of the small asphalt road, Taliesin West slowly allows me to see just pieces and parts through the saguaro and chain fruit cholla cacti. Creosote bush, partially feathering the edges of the “camp” This was the first small road that began to change my life. Right there on the spot I was an undeniable follower of everything Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Living Green in Plano Expo was this weekend! This is something I look forward to every year. It is getting bigger and bigger. I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Ed Begley, Jr. Mr. Begley discussed Frank Lloyd Wright and how Mr. Wright was ahead of every Architect in what is now “Green” Architecture. We will be working diligently together to push for a more sustainable community!
