I had the opportunity to meet Angela McCall – franchise owner of Maid Brigade for Dallas metroplex at one of my lectures. We had a couple of phone conversations and I was excited to actually meet Angela in person and tour her facility. It was obvious in the time we spent together that Angela is genuine in providing the best ‘green’ cleaning service possible for her customers. She loves what she does and believes in her purpose – to be environmentally friendly and safe – adhering to strict green cleaning requirements using non-toxic cleaning products. Angela is energetic and eager to provide a healthy home for her clients. StudiOrganic and Maid Brigade will provide a gift certificate for 100.00 off of your first cleaning, and StudiOrganic will offer a 100.00 off of a Eco-home consultation. Partnering together for our customers is exciting! I can state simply, Maid Brigade is the “Real Deal”! I personally look forward to a long relationship with Angela and her team at Maid Brigade.
“Green Cleaning For Your Health Maid Brigade is the only national house cleaning company to offer Green Clean Certified™ service. Anne’s Awakening
June 19th, 2009 | Written by Anne FisherPosted in Anne's Awakening, Blog | View Comments
Tags: Dear Abby, Environment, Organic food, Plastic
I’m an old hippie, a boomer, a person who wore tie-dye in 1970 and bucked the establishment. I thought I knew the issues, was “with it”, had it going on. Tree-hugging might be a bit extreme, but I support animals, organic foods, recycling, and have for years. Okay, maybe I recycled cans because it was easy – father-in-law collected them and gave them to a neighbor who needed the recycle money. When my city put out the blue bins, I recycled paper and glass and plastic as well. It’s easy – they pick it up. But was I aware and awake? Am I now?
The beginning of Anne’s real awakening came just recently. I read Dear Abby – well, who doesn’t? I was shocked by one just before Earth Day in April. She listed a few of the usual throw-away items we use, and how long it takes them to degrade. Bad, bad and worse. But at the bottom was Styrofoam – it never, ever biodegrades! I had no idea! Anne awakens! So… why is it legal? Why is it around? My initial indignation was huge. But, of course, it serves a very important purpose – keeps stuff cold, keeps stuff hot, cheap…
More on how we fight that later. But first… I walked into my office lunch room, and on the shelves are piles of Styrofoam cups. We also have glass cups and mugs in the cabinets, but I watched person after person take the Styrofoam. I put up a sign – “Earth Day is Wednesday – celebrate by using glass!” I attached the newspaper clipping showing Styrofoam never degrades. Believe it or not, someone came in and scratched that out. An office of 40 professional adults and someone childishly scratched it out. What threatened that person about my sign?
I’ll come back to the cups later. Right now I am trying to deal with the concept that someone found the idea of not using Styrofoam so threatening that they had to obliterate it. Anne is awakening.

Hey – You, Driver and I, Ruth Driver

Hey – You, Driver and I, Ruth Driver
I, Ruth can not understand the hurried rush once a traffic light turns green? Once the light turns green – It is a race to the finish (or the next red light). I, Ruth think of the sheer energy and fuel that is being consumed in that one jolt by you, driver. I, Ruth am told that moderation in speed is best for our environment. If we must drive a vehicle we should car pool with others. If we must drive a vehicle it should also be fuel efficient.
I, Ruth ponder this at a red light and conclude the following of you, driver as I am catching up with you at the next red light:
You, driver must make a lot of money and confused where to spend your extra cash.
You, driver must be late for an interview and have been unemployed for 1+ year
You, driver are rushing the sick to the hospital (even if I, Ruth do not see anyone but you, driver in the vehicle – possible backseat writhing in pain)
You, driver are very young and Mom/Dad pays for the gas
I, Ruth try to come up with lots of reasons for this behavior? Then I, Ruth realize something.
Why am I driving my car? Why am I not walking? My grocery store is not too far from my house. Here I am concerned about others and yet what am doing? Then, I, Ruth conclude the following:
I, Ruth am lazy
I, Ruth am too busy
I, Ruth am too tired
I, Ruth am scared of my security
I, Ruth do not think that I can carry everything home
I, Ruth do not like the heat and sweating
(I, Ruth can come up with a lot more excuses)
My I, Ruth dilemma is trying to figure out why I am looking at others when it starts with I, Ruth!
Definite 0 for the environment and 1 for I, Ruth Driver and You, Driver too!

Mr. Wright’s Birthday at Taliesin
June 13th, 2009 | Written by Corey W CrawfordPosted in Blog, Life at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin | View Comments

June 8th is a special day at Taliesin. Mr. Wright’s birthday celebration. Somewhat of a quiet affair among the fellowship. Dinner, is prepared with a little extra care, and of course Mr. Wright’s special birthday cake. Ahh the birthday cake. A two hour process for the cake.
Mr. Wright was forbidden to have sweets by his Doctors except for this once a year occasion. So if you were a lucky apprentice having kitchen duty, the cake was actually fun to make. A huge sheet cake with multiple layers. Chocolate, fruit jams between the layers, and chocolate sauce drizzled all over the white icing.
The special part of the event at dinner was listening to the senior fellowship members take turns sharing a story or experience with Mr. Wright. The wealth of knowledge the senior fellowship members hold is breath taking. The ding, ding, ding of a wine glass being tapped by a utensil, grabbing the mumbling attention of the fellowship in the dining room. One of the fellowship members would clear their throats and begin a speaking. By the time they were finished, I always had chills racing up and down my arms and necks. The inspiration is still with me today, just as if I were sitting there at Hillside dining room at Taliesin Spring Green, WI.
The opportunities that live at Taliesin is infinite. The many questions, I still need to ask, but did not know enough to ask, the questions that I did ask, answered with open arms. Mr. Wright started this following of Organic Architecture, that still thrives to this day! I would say that Mr. Wright did an amazing job in amazing times.
Mr. Wright’s birthday is one to be celebrated, because without Mr. Wright I cannot imagine how lacking our American Architecture could be.
To wash by hand or by dishwasher
June 9th, 2009 | Written by iRUTHPosted in Uncategorized, iRUTH Dilemma | View Comments
I, Ruth cannot figure out which is greener? Hand washing or Dishwasher? I know. It is the age-old question. I have been told that ‘environmentally’ a dishwasher uses less water than hand washing.
If I, Ruth do not have new water efficient dishwasher (stainless steel for sure!) will my dishwasher still be the green choice? How does the soap evenly distribute among the dishes for adequate cleaning in the dishwasher? Once the door is shut, I, Ruth have to assume that the dishwasher is working. I, Ruth have to assume this because I am not sick (yet). What about hand washing? Is this a green choice? Does hand washing really kill the germs? I, Ruth mean, no matter how hot the water is – it can’t bee too hot or it will burn hands. How about turning off and on the water for rinsing – Is that greener than the dishwasher? Will it break my faucet faster? Then what will I do with the broken faucet – do I make it an ornamental object for my yard since I, Ruth do not want to put in the land fill. Maybe it is a combination of both – big sink of water for even distribution of soap then into the dishwasher for deep heat cleaning (sounds like a conditioner commercial).
I, Ruth contemplate this dilemma on a daily basis while cleaning up after meals. Whether dishwashing or hand washing, it should be done as efficiently as possible. Conserve the water and use soap that is earth friendly and without chemicals. Air drying is also recommended. This helps with not using cloth or paper towels for drying. I, Ruth think this is a tied game between me and Environment. We are doing the best with what we have but so much more can be done if we had different resources and the motivation to do something other than convenience.
To-Go Time
June 9th, 2009 | Written by Corey W CrawfordPosted in Blog, The Real Deal | View Comments
One of the current issues that keeps popping up in my life as an eco concern is Styrofoam to-go containers.

And this is particularly upsetting because it is so unneccesary. There are companies out there making fantastic eco-friendly to-go containers. Eco Dallas and Eco Go are two examples. Eco Go offers a variety of containers that are all biodegadeable, compostable and microwaveable. There products are made from both corn and casavva starch. In fact according to their website the casavva products will dissolve in water in 7 days. Just imagine how much less pollution our oceans would have if all our to-go containers did that!
So, now why are restaurants and other companies not using these products. I put the blame squarely on the consumers. They don’t demand it. I recently ate at Cafe Brazil which serves portion sizes big enough for 3 meals.
So I am certain plenty of people ask for to-go containers. But they only offer Styrofoam. Nothing else. And the waiter didn’t seem concerned when I requested any but Styrofoam. This is a restaurant with a forest and nature painted on the wall. But their choice is certainly not helping keep our planet healthy. So, I begrudingly took the container and filled out a comment card. This is where it must start. Enough consumers must consistently request that businesses do what is right.

Not Just Your Everyday Garden Shed
June 8th, 2009 | Written by Corey W CrawfordPosted in Blog, Current Designs | View Comments
When we were installing a new rain barrel a couple weeks ago, the homeowner asked if we build garden sheds. Of course I love to design and build, especially if the homeowner was looking at store bought sheds. The area would be next to the home, measuring just 8 foot by 6 foot.
On this project as on most, we were able to use some materials that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill. Specifically we used commercial glass sample from an architecture firm and granite. Tons of granite gets dumped into landfills weekly from counter top manufacturers. We installed a mosaic granite floor by breaking granite slabs and turning them upside down so the polished side is down. How many Garden Sheds have a granite floor? The shed also has a small solar powered light.
The wood, is cedar and pine. Using cedar fence pickets, we can rip them and turn them into trim boards, instead of buying precut trim. Yes, ripping trim takes more time, but well worth the effort. The inside of the shed has the studs exposed to maximize the installation of shelving and hangers. The square windows will provide the homeowner a place to have her seed starting trays this coming spring. We enjoyed the homeowner’s attitude of being green, as well as building the Garden Shed!
