The Styrofoam cup issue remains with me. I’ve moved beyond the person who defaced my little sign asking that we celebrate Earth Day by using glass and pointing out that Styrofoam never biodegrades. Now I need to work on stopping the use of the Styrofoam cups, at least in my office lunchroom. After all, my company is part of a large corporation that has gone to great lengths to tell the world they are concerned about the earth and are working to be green. They even made it part of our Mission Statement. We have a Green Blog on our intranet and we’re trying to go paperless.
I learned that the cups are ordered through our corporate-approved vendor. I sent a link to the person who does the ordering to a company that sells biodegradable cups. She’s on board – she recently went out and bought herself a special tumbler that she can use for her water and tea so she doesn’t have to use the cups. But she can only order cups through the approved vendor, and they don’t offer any biodegradable options. I sent a comment about THAT to the Green Blog! If this is our “Mission”, we need to make it possible.
We do have glass cups and tumblers in the cabinets, but the dishwasher doesn’t always get the lipstick off of them, and then you have to walk back down the hall to wash them, while you can throw away the Styrofoam… Oh, what we must go through to save the earth.

Greener Lawns
I, Ruth work at home sometimes. My home has three big windows which I gaze out periodically contemplating my next thought or task. Through this window, I, Ruth see a lawn truck (name not mentioned on purpose) pull up to a house on my street. This peaks my interest (no I am not a nosy neighbor!) I see the driver of the lawn truck (not a “green” lawn truck either) take out chemicals and pesticides and begin spraying the yard. I mean this driver did not leave any part untouched. The driver did a great job and should be proud – Kudos! I, Ruth begin thinking about this process of chemicals, pesticides, the smell, the ground – so much to think through. Now the dilemma begins. This yard has a family. This family has a very young child. The child crawls. I see the child crawling on this lawn that was treated earlier in the day (yes I am still working and looking out the window). Do I, Ruth tell the family? There are so many products on the market today that are chemical-free to treat yards for greener grass – reducing weeds, etc. I decided not to say anything. I am still unsure if this was the correct decision. Definitely decided however that this would be a zero for the Environment and a zero for the Child – but hey – the yard looks great – so 1 for the owner of the house!

Here I sit in the studio of Detail21, a fellow Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture graduate. It is hard to grasp the amount of “green” structures. Green roofs are mandated. Yes, all flat roofs that are built are to be green roofs planted with grasses and native plants. The government charges as a tax the amount of water that runs off of the roof! Therefore, a green roof is perfect. We will be updating the blogs further with all of the green collaborations upon the return to the USA.
