richardSorry I have been away, but as all my buddies say, “I have been in trouble with the wife.”  Yapp yapp..  So I have been in the mancave a lot and have been enjoying my newest find.  Organic Cigars!  Yes, something that I enjoy, now is organic.  I am on the second box of Plasencia Reserva Organica Robusto cigars.  So being in trouble has not been too bad.  While enjoying my new find, I am researching other organic man stuff.

These cigars are smooth, clean, and is a refreshing smoke!  No aftertaste, and I can imagine not breathing pesticides or herbicides.  I look forward to coming home after a hard day, which starts at 4 am and easing into my giant chair and lighting up in my mancave.  To watch hunting on my flat screen, have a fine single malt Scotch, and new newest find, Organic Cigars.  Thank you Plasencia!!!

Amanda_Scott_AvatarDear HOA,

The weed that you refer in your letter to me is a pumpkin patch.  It is not a weed and I do not have to have it removed.  I have been growing this pumpkin patch for sometime now.  I am not going to plant pansies per your suggestion.    The children of the neighborhood are watching the progress of the pumpkins.  The pumpkin patch also provides a colorful decoration and best of all can be eaten too!  Are pansies really preferred over pumpkins by the HOA?  I did not see a sign as I drive in that states “The HOA in this area stamps their approval for pansy planting”!   Also, on a similar subject, did you know that the common area of the neighborhood is wasted space? Wouldn’t it be great to have a community garden?  A garden that can be maintained by the people that care about each other and the environment!  The food derived from the garden can feed the neighborhood and a natural alternative to processed foods.  I am assuming, though, if my pumpkin patch is offensive, a community garden would be an outrageous! Either way, please let me know.

Signed, Amanda

I, Ruth Turkey Day Dilemma

Fall has arrived.  It is a favorite time of year for me!  I, Ruth love the cool crisp air, the leaves changing colors, the smells – and of course Thanksgiving!  I love turkey, pumpkin pie (not sweet potato), jelly cranberry (not whole) and still in the shape of the can – and of course, the family dysfunctions.

All joking aside, I, Ruth really do get excited about spending the day with family and friends. Everyone taking a day out of their busy schedules, hopefully having the day off, and spending time with people we care about.   At the table talking about memories of loved ones that have left and also creating beautiful new memories of the day or very funny memories – such as forgetting to turn the oven on to cook the turkey!

The part that frustrates me year after year is the turkey.  Our demand during this time of year for a turkey!

I, Ruth have always been on the verge of vegetarian because of the unethical treatment of animals and in this specific case, the turkey such as removing the feet leaving just nubs, injecting with growth hormones, also cutting off the beaks.  This behavior creates a very plump unnatural unhealthy unhappy turkey.  For a great video check out our friend Daryl Hannah’s website.  http://www.dhlovelife.com/v2/show/archive/?wk=25

Turkey day is coming soon and I know that I, Ruth will need to make a decision.

A decision probably between pesticides, hormones – or cooking tofu!  I, Ruth am a traditional person and do not see me cooking tofu (no offense).  So now back with turkey (Sigh)

I, Ruth decided to research turkey (another research project) – surely knowing there has to be a compromise somewhere.   When finally I, Ruth found a great alternative – a free range turkey!

Please check out this website www.edensorganicgardencenter.com

Did I actually find my compromise?  I, Ruth think I may have and decided to put a deposit down for my free range natural turkey .

Please remember You, Audience, there are alternatives – although does require additional research – can be definitely worth it – just depends how much you want to change for yourself and your environment!

A win for Thanksgiving; A win for Mother Nature; A win for ethical turkey treatment and

A win for I, Ruth

Paper

Anne Street

I’m working hard to be more and more green, but I seem to have a hang-up:  Paper.  I want to save the trees.  I consider this a very worthy cause – many of my hippie buddies were willing to chain themselves to the trees and be arrested for it.  But what am I willing to do?

The problem I have is at work.  At home I am able to re-use every scrap of paper I can find, and when there is no space left, it goes in the recycle bin.  I use the iphone to make my grocery lists.  I put recipes into the computer and sit the laptop in the kitchen when I’m cooking.  I’m doing what I can on that front.

But at work, even though my employer pushes “paperless”, I can’t seem to let go of my paper.  I feel a real need for my paper file.  I scan everything and save it on the computer or internet, but when I have to find an obscure paragraph in a 50 page document, I am lost with the scanned stuff.  I search and search.  Give me a paper file and I’ll have it in moments.  Do I sacrifice valuable time to use less paper?  It’s going to be recycled eventually anyway, but while they are working documents, I want my paper.

I know that part of this is habit, deeply ingrained habit.  If I had grown up with computers, I’m sure I would be much more adept at finding what I need and using the paperless systems.  I feel like a dinosaur on this subject.  But I ask my young cohorts to believe that I will recycle the paper later, and let me have it for now.  I’ll keep trying to wean myself off.  I quit smoking about the 50th time I tried, so there’s hope.  Be patient.
